Ludwig Pielen (born March 26, 1910 in Aachen , † November 18, 1998 in Bonn ) was a German crop scientist . He gave lectures on seeds at the University of Bonn . From 1956 he was in charge of the arable and crop production department in the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forests , and since 1965 he has headed the “Agricultural Production” department.

Life

Ludwig Pielen studied agriculture at the University of Bonn and received his doctorate in 1939 at George Sessous at the University of Giessen with a dissertation on the possibilities of protein feed production through intercropping on heavy ground . In 1944 he completed his habilitation in Gießen with a thesis on plant cultivation measures for the cultivation of winter wheat and acquired the Venia legendi for the fields of plant cultivation and plant breeding. From 1948 to 1955 he worked as a consultant for seeds and plant breeding at the Rhineland Chamber of Agriculture in Bonn . During this time he held lectures on seeds at the University of Bonn as a private lecturer , from 1953 as an associate professor .

In 1956 Pielen was appointed head of department at the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forests , where he took over the sub-department “Plant and Animal Production and Agricultural Technology” as Ministerialrat in 1957. Since 1965 he was head of the “Agricultural Production” department as Ministerial Director. In these functions he was also responsible for the seed industry . However, he has always maintained his close ties to science and as a lecturer at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Bonn held lectures on seeds and cultivar science every winter semester . In 1970 he was awarded the title of honorary professor .

As a representative of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry, Pielen was a member of several scientific committees and advisory boards of German research institutions. He also took on sovereign tasks at international conferences , where he particularly represented the interests of the German seed industry . As part of cultural and economic exchange programs between the Federal Republic of Germany and other countries, Pielen organized agricultural study trips and published reports on them. He published several articles on seeds in the magazine Saatgutwirtschaft .

In the years after 1950 Pielen worked hard to establish an independent scientific society for agricultural crop production in Germany. In the Society for Crop Science, founded in 1956, he was the first managing director until 1963 and an honorary member since 1993 .

Pielen was a member of the Catholic student union K.St.V. Rheno-Borussia Bonn.
