Carl Ederer

Carl Ederer (born April 23, 1875 in Vienna , † April 2, 1951 in Munich ) was an Austrian painter , graphic artist and mosaicist who lived and worked in Germany from 1910.

Life

Ederer attended a private painting school as well as the Vienna School of Applied Arts and the Vienna Art Academy . In 1899 he received the Academy's Rome Prize.

From 1905 to 1909 he was a member of the Vienna Secession . After a trial against Koloman Moser in 1908, which ended with a settlement, he turned away from Vienna and in 1910 accepted a professorship at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , which he held until 1944. There he was a member of the renowned artists' association “Malkasten” .

Ederer made a design drawing for the mosaic altarpiece of the church at Steinhof , and in this regard he litigated Koloman Moser for his plagiarism allegation. He also drew the designs for the Elizabeth Chapel in the Mexico Church , which is decorated with gold mosaics .

In addition to sacred works of art such as the mosaics mentioned, depictions of animals also received special attention within his work. A large exhibition of more than 40 works at the Great Art Exhibition in Düsseldorf in 1911 showed a cross-section of his work and contained oil paintings, pastels, watercolors, tempera pictures, drawings and lithographs.
