Carl Faust , also Karl Faust (born October 30, 1874 in Reyershausen , Hanover province , † November 14, 1935 in Düsseldorf ), was a German genre and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School . In particular, he appeared as a copyist of old masters .

life and work

From 1894 Faust studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There were Johann Peter Theodor Janssen , Heinrich Lauenstein and Clausmeyer his teachers. In addition to genre and portrait painting, he specialized in the reproduction of works by old masters. He made replicas of works by Anthony van Dyck , Frans Hals , Hans Holbein the Younger , Bartolomé Esteban Murillo , Rembrandt van Rijn and Tizian . One of the personalities who valued him as a portrait painter was the art collector Alexander Schnütgen , who sat in an armchair in 1910 and had him paint in 1918, the year he died.
