Lawrence Brittain

Lawrence Brittain (born November 9, 1990 in Pretoria ) is a South African rower .

Athletic career

Brittain started rowing in 2002. In 2008 he took part in the two-man without helmsman in the Junior World Championships and finished 13th as the winner of the C-final. In 2009 he won the same boat class in the B final of the U23 World Championships . In 2010 he competed with John Smith and was U23 world champion, in 2011 he won the silver medal together with David Hunt . In 2012, Lawrence Brittain and Shaun Keeling tried to qualify for the two-man Olympic competition in Lucerne, the South Africans took fourth place, only the first two boats were qualified for London.

In 2013 Brittain and Keeling took eighth place at the World Championships . The following year Brittain rowed with David Hunt and helmsman Willie Morgan in two with helmsman and reached fifth place at the world championships . In 2015, Brittain dropped out for a while because of Hodgkin's lymphoma . After the cancer was treated, Brittain entered the world championships with the four-man without a helmsman and won the C-final. After James Hunt and Shaun Keeling had qualified for the 2016 Olympics in two without a helmsman, the recovered Brittain came on board for Hunt. Keeling and Brittain won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , almost three seconds behind New Zealanders Hamish Bond and Eric Murray .

Lawrence Brittain is the younger brother of 2012 Olympic medalist Matthew Brittain .
