Esser, daughter of a master baker from Düsseldorf- Pempelfort and sister of the artist Hannes Esser , who was five years his senior , received his first artistic training at Hans Carp's art school . In the early post-war period he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There she was a pupil with Günter Grass in Josef Mages' class .

In 1984 she portrayed Mages' head in the form of a fired clay sculpture and placed the head bust on a basalt lava base of the same size. The city of Düsseldorf acquired the “Big Head” in 1990/91 at the Great Art Exhibition NRW Düsseldorf and set up the sculpture on the edge of the Rheinpark opposite the building of the Düsseldorf district government. The curator Johannes auf der Lake commented on the work: “The thoughtful use of special materials and the conspicuously inconspicuous relationship between sculpture and base reveal the strict seriousness of Trude Esser's sculptural work. The human head as the central place of his consciousness has always been a selected topic in sculptural discussion. Whether as a portrait with an emphasis on the characteristics of what is depicted or, as in Trude Esser's “Big Head”, rather de-individualized and shaped into a more general statement. "

In the 1950s and 1960s Trude Esser was a frequent guest at the Zum Csikós pub , initially a simple tavern, which in the 1950s developed into a jazz bar and a popular meeting place for artists. She also frequented the “Kreuzherrenecke” Altestadt 14 , then known as “Bobby”. There she met her friends and artists, for example Bruno Goller , Germán Becerra , Anatol , Hannes Loos , Franz Witte , Peter Rübsam , Kurt Sandweg , Herbert Zangs , Günter Grass and the architect Bernhard Pfau . There she also met her brother Hannes Esser, who settled in 1957 in the Einbrunger Mühle am Schwarzbach . Trude Esser had received the information about the living possibilities in the mill from the architect Bernhard Pfau, who had a house on Mühlenkamp. Becerra and Witte immortalized Trude Esser in 1957/58, fourth from the bottom left, on the tin drum picture , which has been in the collection of the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf since 2009 .

Daniel Spoerri opened together with the landlord Carlo Schröter (* 1935) the restaurant of the seven senses at Düsseldorf Burgplatz 19 (corner of Mühlenstrasse) in 1968 and the “ Eat Art Gallery” in 1970 , where food was used exclusively for artistic and visual purposes. Spoerri initiated various editions and happenings at regular intervals with the participation of contemporary artists, the relics of which were also sold through the gallery. In 1972 Trude Esser was involved in the "Edition EAT", an object box that was filled with works that had been made by different artists using different techniques.

On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Düsseldorf, she was represented with a work at the exhibition Sculpture D-88 , which was organized by the sculptor Peter Schwickerath . The exhibition, which lasted from May to October 1988, spanned art sites, parks and squares in the city of Düsseldorf. Other participants in the exhibition were the sculptors Hede Bühl , Anatol Herzfeld , Paul Isenrath , Hannelore Köhler , Adolf Luther , Kurt Sandweg  and Fritz Schwegler .

Trude Esser became a member of the Association of Düsseldorf Artists of 1844 (VdDK), of which she was chairman. Her studio was located in the Atelierhaus Sittarder Straße 5. As a member of the Association for the Organization of Art Exhibitions , she was almost regularly involved in the exhibition Die GROSSE in the Museum Kunstpalast . In commemoration of her, the VdDK exhibited two large head sculptures and three smaller sculptures at the large art exhibition NRW Düsseldorf in spring 2016 .
