1981 to 1982 Idea and organization: The ambulant museum I + II , of Stinnes AG, Mülheim an der Ruhr.

The ambulant museum took place twice at the beginning of the 1980s in Stinnes AG, Mülheim. the ambulant museum is an attempt to make contemporary art more accessible. In this case, the viewer does not need to go to the museum, but the museum comes to him at the workplace and thus the art from the sheltered museum space into the natural environment of everyday life. the ambulante museum represents an excerpt from the work of Düsseldorf artists who have come together to this concept. The relationship between mass and space, volume and space and the effect of surface directions in space is the theme of his work. The surface as the boundary of the body, the line when the surfaces of the body meet, as well as the color and structure of the material are the means. Peter Schwickerath prefers clearly defined forms for his metal sculptures , such as the square column and the cylinder. With their different arrangement and the interplay of mass and volume, these aim to represent spatial references and make them recognizable. Schwickerath is particularly interested in the variety of possibilities in formal simplicity and rigor.

“Steel is his preferred material, with which he has been working for years. In technically complex processes, it apparently effortlessly folds and bends black sheet metal, rolled steel and stainless steel. [...] The "large bottom fold" made of just 10 millimeters thick stainless steel appears light and elegant [...]. Two elements of different lengths are arranged at right angles to each other, with the long part protruding vertically into the room, while the shorter part lies flat on the floor. The meeting point of the two sides is marked by a fold. […] The industrial character of rolled steel is closer to Schwickerath. In the case of rather small objects, he puts straight and curved shapes in an attractive relationship of tension. Bends break up the strict straight lines again and again. [...] In his most recent works, the artist layers and sticks massive steel girders into striking wall and floor sculptures. As clearly structured as they appear, they don't reveal all their secrets. Nevertheless, the work has a lot to say - and that goes beyond all brooding about exhausted angles of inclination. "
