Adolf Wamper

Adolf Wamper (born June 23, 1901 in Würselen ; † May 22, 1977 in Essen ) was a German sculptor . His works were mostly figurative and partly abstract realism . Most recently he was artistic director at the Folkwang University in Essen .

Life

Wamper was a student of the painter August von Brandis . He came to Berlin at the age of 34 in 1935 and redesigned the Deutsche Oper in Berlin-Charlottenburg together with Paul Baumgarten . According to the membership file, Adolf Wamper joined the NSDAP on May 1, 1933 in Düsseldorf. He was soon considered to be one of the representatives of the National Socialist conception of art . Wamper was friends with other artists of the time such as Arno Breker and Josef Thorak . In the final phase of World War II , Adolf Hitler included him in the God-gifted list of the most important visual artists in August 1944 , which saved him from being deployed in the war, including on the home front . From 1948 Wamper was head of the sculpture class at the Folkwang School in Essen. In 1970 he was awarded the title of professor on the occasion of his departure.

Works

In 1936 Wamper was able to create the entrance reliefs for the 1936 Olympic Games on the open-air stage on the Reichssportfeld . After many official commissions, his sculpture Genius des Sieges was presented to the public at the Great German Art Exhibition in Munich in 1940 .

His best-known late work is The Black Madonna of Remagen , which he made from the mud of the prison camp "Golden Mile" .

His other works include the bronze sculpture of the listed Turnfest monument, in food to the German Gymnastics Festival in 1963 recalls, as well as the bronze figure of the market fountain in Essen- Rüttenscheid , which is also a listed building.
