Katherine Richardson Christensen (born May 11, 1954 in the United States ) is an American oceanographer specializing in marine biology .

Life

After graduating from Yarmouth High School in Yarmouth , Maine in 1972 , Katherine Richardson graduated with Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1976 . With her doctoral thesis The Role of Dissolved Organic Material in the Nutrition and Survival of Marine Dinoflagellates , she successfully completed her doctorate in 1980 as part of a Marshall Fellowship with Gordon Elliot Fogg (1919–2005) at the University of Wales, Bangor . She then worked as a postdoc with John Albert Raven (* 1941) at the University of Dundee until June 1983 . Until 1988 she was employed as a biologist at the Danish Institute for Fisheries and Marine Research. From 1988 to 1996 she was department head in the same institute for marine and coastal ecology. After two more years as head of research, she became a professor at Aarhus University in 1998 . She is currently also a professor at the University of Copenhagen .

Politically, Richardson works as an advisor to various committees, associations and institutions for the protection of the seas. Among other things, she was a participant in various climate conferences, including the UN climate conference in Cancún .

Richardson has been married to forester and environmental officer Jens Bjerregaard Christensen since 1983. The couple have two children together.
