Lorenz Bösken (born March 31, 1891 in Geldern ; † September 8, 1967 in Düsseldorf ) was a German expressionist painter who also made mosaics and worked as a glass artist.

Life

Bösken first began studying at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Krefeld with Thorn Prikker , before continuing this at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1907 to 1918. There he was a master student, among others with Franz Kiederich . During this time he made study visits to Rome, Paris, Florence and Munich. In 1918 he was expelled from the academy after he had advocated a say for students as a student spokesman.

Bösken was a member of the Mutter-Ey-Kreis and the artists' association Das Junge Rheinland .

During the National Socialist rule he was banned from exhibiting, but he could paint and sell. In 1943 his studio with almost 400 works fell victim to a bomb attack.

Bösken's motifs range from landscapes, cityscapes and portraits to religious themes and expressionist figures, not infrequently with horses. Characteristic are pictures of workers, e.g. B. in steelworks or in railway construction.

Works by the artist, who is mainly active in Düsseldorf, can be found in public spaces such as in the Essen-Stoppenberg town hall or in the St. Peter's Church in Duisburg-Rheinhausen (triptych Werden - Sein - Vergehen , mosaic) and in the municipal art collections of Düsseldorf .
