Fritz Köhler (painter, 1887)

Fritz Köhler (born June 28, 1887 in Moritzberg near Hildesheim , † February 12, 1972 in Düsseldorf ) was a German landscape and marine painter .

Life

Fritz Köhler, baptized Friedrich Köhler, was born in Moritzberg near Hildesheim in 1887. In 1892 his family moved to Hamburg , where the cholera epidemic had just broken out. The Köhler family was spared the epidemic. Köhler attended elementary school at the age of five. In his youth, Fritz Köhler traveled the oceans on merchant ships .

From 1905 to 1907 Fritz Köhler attended the School of Applied Arts in Hamburg and Altona. The then director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle , Alfred Lichtwark , recognized Köhler's talent and advised him to visit the university in Weimar. From 1909 to 1912 he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Weimar , until 1910 with Max Thedy (antique drawing and nude studies) and then as a master student with the landscape painter Theodor Hagen .

After studying in Weimar, Köhler set up a studio in Hamburg for a short time. From 1913 Fritz Köhler worked in Düsseldorf. During the Second World War , his apartment and studio in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel were destroyed and he evacuated to Berchtesgaden . In 1945 he returned to Düsseldorf. Köhler's last studio was in the artist house of the Association of Düsseldorf Artists on Sittarder Strasse 5 in Düsseldorf-Pempelfort . Köhler was a member of the Reich Association of Fine Artists of Germany as well as of the Düsseldorf artists' association Malkasten and was a co-founder of the "Künstlergruppe 1949".
