Michael Kortländer was born in Münster in 1953. At the age of 19 he moved to Düsseldorf and began studying there from 1972 to 1978 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with the painter Gerhard Hoehme . In 1978 Michael Kortländer was made a master class student. Based on and in contrast to the spatial painting of his teacher, he began at this time with his first work in space, so-called "spatial images", which he realized primarily with cardboard. From 1982 to 1984 he received the Wilhelm Lehmbruck grant and from 1985 he received a working grant from the Federation of German Industries at Europa Carton AG, which donated a large part of his materials to him. In 1993 and 1996 he was a lecturer at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences for sculptural design. In 2008, 2013 and 2016, Kortländer was a guest at the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris . At the beginning of his career painting dominated his work, while he discovered sculpture for himself from the 1980s . His preferred material is cardboard, which he often paints over with glazed layers or simply soaked with linseed oil.

In 2013, he and artist colleagues from Palermo and Düsseldorf founded the Düsseldorf Palermo eV association , which set in motion the art and cultural exchange between the two cities with exhibitions in Düsseldorf and Palermo and led to a city partnership in 2016 . In 2014 Michael Kortländer was elected chairman of the Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Help . Numerous artistic initiatives were and continue to be launched by this association for the city of Düsseldorf.
