Hermann Heinrich Becker (born September 24, 1817 in Hamburg , † May 3, 1885 in Aachen ) was a German painter and art historian .

Life

Becker was the son of the Hamburg merchant and broker of the same name, Hermann Becker († 1838). His own son also had the first name Hermann.

From 1839 to 1844 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , including from 1840 to 1842 under Karl Ferdinand Sohn , together with Carl Gottfried Eybe and Christoph Wilhelm Wohlien . He then went on study trips to Antwerp , Paris , Brussels and Italy . In 1844 he settled in Düsseldorf as a freelance painter and worked as a history and genre painter . Later (1866) he lived as an art critic in Cologne .

In addition to his work as a painter and art writer, Becker was organizationally active: in 1844 he was one of the founders of the Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Help and was a founding member of the Düsseldorf artists ' association Malkasten in 1848 and a member of the Hamburg artists' association from 1832 . He was also an initiator of the General German Art Cooperative , which was constituted in Bingen at the end of September 1856 .

In the Historical Archive of the City of Cologne , his unpublished manuscript is a comedy Hermann the Cherusci .

Becker's painting was linked to the style of the Nazarenes . He preferred to devote himself to religious motifs and created mythological and historical themes, he created genre scenes and portraits.
