Carl Gottfried Eybe (born December 17, 1813 in Hamburg ; † February 17, 1893 in Blankenese ) was a German painter from the Düsseldorf School of Painting and Hamburg School as well as a lithographer , sculptor and businessman.

Life

The son of the Königsberg innkeeper Gottfried Eybe first completed a commercial apprenticeship. He was then introduced to painting in Hamburg by Friedrich Carl Gröger , together with Christoph Wilhelm Wohlien , with whom he remained friends all his life, and by Heinrich Jacob Aldenrath . From 1839 to 1847 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Karl Ferdinand Sohn and later with Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow , who had a strong influence on him. He then settled down as a painter in his hometown of Hamburg in 1848, but at times earned his living with sculpture and portrait lithographs. Later study trips led him through Germany, the Netherlands , Hungary and Northern Italy . Another friend was the painter Hermann Becker sen. (1817-1885). Carl Gottfried Eybe joined the Düsseldorf artists 'association Crignic in 1846 and was a member of the artists' association Malkasten in 1853/54 and 1858 . In Hamburg he was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 . His portrait, pencil drawing by Christian Boettcher and an oil painting by Ludwig Knaus from 1850 are kept by the artists' association Malkasten in Düsseldorf.

In Düsseldorf, under the influence of Schadow, he initially created paintings on religious subjects, such as Hagar and Ismael in the desert (1845) or Caritas (1847), which the Hamburger Kunsthalle acquired. In Hamburg he turned to popular figure scenes, especially depictions of children, such as Kinder im Walde (1851) and Badende Kinder (1858), and received numerous commissions for bourgeois portraits. Eybe was represented with his work at numerous exhibitions, including 1854 in Munich, 1880 in Düsseldorf and 1887 in Hamburg.
