Heinrich Jacob Aldenrath (born February 17, 1775 in Lübeck , † February 25, 1844 in Hamburg ) was a North German miniature painter and lithographer .

Life

Aldenrath was the son of a gold wire manufacturer in Lübeck. At the age of thirteen he became a student of the portrait painter Friedrich Carl Gröger, who was just under twenty at the time . They soon formed a close partnership - and from then on they lived together "in the most loyal friendship of heart and art". From 1789 they studied together at the Academy of Arts in Berlin . They then went to Hamburg together and then, after a joint study trip to Dresden and Paris , moved back to Lübeck, where they worked until 1807. Moving between Hamburg, Copenhagen, Kiel and Lübeck, they settled permanently in a joint household in Hamburg around 1814.

After lithography became known in northern Germany from 1818 onwards, both of them also turned to this technique and initially worked for Johannes Michael Speckter , Otto and Erwin Speckter's father . Under their company name, Gröger & Aldenrath , they both produced a large number of portrait lithographs, although their respective individual handwritings can hardly be distinguished. Aldenrath's best-known works by hand include the portraits of the Count's poets Christian and Friedrich Leopold zu Stolberg-Stolberg , which were widely used as title vignettes for their works.

After Groeger's death in 1838, Aldenrath seems to have worked little further and in 1842 retired to Holstein. He died in 1844 and was buried next to Gröger.

The Aldenrathsweg in Hamburg-Barmbek is named after him - and connected to the Grögersweg via Tischbeinstraße .
