St. Jürgen Chapel (Castle on Fehmarn)

St. Jürgen Chapel

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Jürgen Chapel is a Gothic brick building from the 13th century with a foundation made of boulders and a saddle roof on which a cross is attached. On the outer walls of the chapel, the pointed arched windows typical of the Gothic period stand out.

It is located about one kilometer southeast of the city center of Burg auf Fehmarn , Kapellenweg 13.

Originally, the chapel was part of an infirmary in which people suffering from plague and leprosy were cared for. It was - as usual in the Middle Ages - outside the city. According to data from the "Society for Leprosy", the Leprosorium was first mentioned in a document in 1439. In the 17th century there was a place near the chapel where witches were burned. Later it was used at times as a weapons arsenal and also as a horse stable.

Inside the St. Jürgen Chapel, a wooden sacrament house from the 13th century and well-preserved wall paintings from the 15th century are worth seeing.

While an outside inspection is possible at any time, the chapel is only open during service times and by telephone arrangement with the Burg city administration.
