Gustav Rutz
Karl Gustav Rutz (born December 14, 1857 in Cologne ; † August 9, 1949 there ) was a German sculptor .
life and work
Gustav Rutz was first painting student of Julius Geertz in Düsseldorf . With his fellow students from Atelier Geertz, Franz Thöne and August Flinker , Gustav Rutz went on study trips within Germany. In Munich he then trained in sculpture with Anton Hess . From 1879, Rutz settled in Düsseldorf. His studio was located in 1888 directly opposite the south side of the art academy in Haus Hafenwall 7 (today Eiskellerstraße). He became known through cemetery and memorial sculptures as well as numerous fountains in German cities. His sculptures, some in the neo-baroque style, earned national fame at that time. Around 1899 he was a member of the 1st Art Association in Düsseldorf .
During the visit of the imperial couple Wilhelm II and Viktoria at the end of October 1900 in (Wuppertal-) Vohwinkel , the "Victory Fountain with Germania" was ceremoniously unveiled. Wilhelm II praised Rutz as its creator, and on January 27, 1901, on the emperor's birthday, the victory fountain became the property of the city of Vohwinkel.
In 1902 Rutz received first prize in the competition for a Kaiser Friedrich statue in Mönchengladbach , and he was entrusted with the execution. The statue was to be placed in the vestibule of the new town hall, the Kaiser-Friedrich-Halle , inaugurated in 1903 .
Rutz was a member of the artists' association Malkasten . The Goethe - Herme made of stone was created by him on the occasion of the Düsseldorf Goethe Festival in 1899 and set up in 1903 in the Malkastenpark , the former Jacobigarten .
The architect Richard Hultsch built a three-story villa for Gustav Rutz on the property at Achenbachstrasse 24 in Düsseldorf-Düsseltal from 1905–1906 .
Rutz died at the age of 91 in the senior residence of the Riehler Heimstätten .
