Life

Grave: Hermann Pohle (1831–1901), Hermann Emil Pohle ("the younger one")

The son of the landscape painter Hermann Pohle was a student of Peter Janssen from 1889 to 1895 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . He was an "important history painter [...] who also emerged as a genre , landscape and portrait painter ", but his "... pictures seem all too mannered; his history pictures are based on the Venetian art of the 16th and 17th centuries ”.

Pohle lived at Jägerhofstrasse 13 in Düsseldorf and had his studio at Elberfelder Strasse 5. The landscape painter and photographer Wilhelm Degode had his first residence in Düsseldorf in the 1880s on Jägerhofstrasse with Hermann Emil Pohle, not far from the Düsseldorf artists' association Paint box of which they were members. Pohle died surprisingly at the age of 51 of heart failure while he was sitting in the “paint box” during a meeting. Since 1910 he was also chairman of the "Association for the Organization of Art Exhibitions" and the "Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Help". He had organized the major Düsseldorf exhibitions in 1911 and 1913. Works by him were also exhibited in major art exhibitions in Berlin, Dresden, Munich, St. Louis (USA) and Vienna.

Pohle lies in a shared grave with his father in the north cemetery in Düsseldorf.

His main work is his cycle Career of the Rail, consisting of six large murals in the Stahlhof, which shows scenes from modern industry. He was also known for his romantic landscapes, strict history painting and decorative art.
