The Stahlhof at Bastionstrasse 39 in Düsseldorf is the seat of the Düsseldorf Administrative Court .

history

The building was built from 1906 to 1908 based on designs by Johannes Radke together with Theo Westbrock for the Stahlwerkverband AG . The representative building, the name of which is linked to the London Stalhof , arose from the self-image of the steel industrialists. The “ industrial barons ” were proud that their steel products were in demand all over the world. As a sign of their power, which they compared to the Hanseatic League , they had a particularly monumental-looking building erected and a crawler attached to the top of the building as a sculptural ornament.

From March 8, 1921 to August 25, 1925, Düsseldorf was occupied by French troops as part of the Allied occupation of the Rhineland . The general staff of the French units used the confiscated Düsseldorf Stahlhof from 1923 to 1925 as its accommodation and command center for the occupation of the Ruhr .

After the Second World War, the building served the military governor John Ashworth Barraclough and from May 1, 1946 the civil governor ( Regional Commissioner ) of the British military government for the province of North Rhine and for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , William Asbury (1889-1961), as Field Office. On August 23, 1946, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia was founded here by Military Ordinance No. 46. Fundamental discussions and decisions took place in this house.

In the 1920s, the Neue Stahlhof was built on the south side of the Stahlhof according to plans by the architect Paul Bonatz as a further administrative building for the steel industry . Also neighboring is the rolled steel house , which dates from the late 1930s. Due to the concentration of administrative headquarters, business associations and interest groups, especially the coal and steel industry , as well as banks and other company-related service providers, Düsseldorf acquired the nickname “ Desk of the Ruhr Area” before the First World War .

description

The administration building, clad with red sandstone, achieves its monumental effect from the combination of material, mass, structure and symbolism: the facade is given vertical accentuation by elongated pilasters and looks like masonry formed into a “stable grid”. This emphasizes the heaviness of the structure. The top floor has been extended and richly decorated with sculptural jewelry. Numerous sculptures allegorically depict industry and trade. The sculptor was Adolf Simatschek . Hermann Emil Pohle painted the cycle Career of the Rail in the conference room of the Stahlhof:
