The dwarf puffer fish ( Carinotetraodon travancoricus ), also called Indian dwarf puffer fish , is a species of puffer fish native to India and Sri Lanka . Scientifically proven sources include the Pamba , Vembanadsee , Meenachil , Cherthala , the wetlands around Thrissur and Chalakudy in the state of Kerala in southwest India. All kinds of Carinotetraodon as well as Monotetre , Aurioglobus , Colomesus and a single kind of the genus Takifugu ( Takifugu orbimaculatus ) are real freshwater puffer fish.

There it lives mainly in herbaceous pools. The Latin name is derived from the Latin word carina "Kiel" and from the Greek words tetra "four" and odous "tooth" (family name Tetraodontidae "Vierzähner"). The water temperatures in its natural biotope fluctuate from 25 ° C to over 33 ° C. The pH is in the range from 6.5 to 7.0.

features

Carinotetraodon travancoricus is difficult to distinguish from its relative Carinotetraodon imitator . Both species show the same dark markings on a yellow background. Overall, however, the drawing is denser in Carinotetraodon travancoricus . The most striking feature is a thick black line at the level of the lateral line organ , which begins below the dorsal fin and extends to the tail fin root. In Carinotetraodon imitator this line is completely absent.

Way of life

The puffer fish, which remains very small at 2 to 3 cm, is not particularly aggressive in contrast to many other puffer fish , but can, due to its character, suppress other conspecifics within an aquarium. Its diet consists of small animals such as mosquito larvae and snails.

Falsely, snails, especially bladder snails, are described by some aquarists as essential for the dwarf puffer, as the snail is supposed to wear the very fine teeth through the shell of the snail. However, one can easily observe that the dwarf puffer fish only targets the meat of the snail and only consumes this - the shell is always intact.

Systematics

Carinotetraodon travancoricus was only included in the current genus a few years ago based on bone examinations . Before that it belonged to the genus Tetraodon .
