The Vembanadsee (in Malayalam : വേമ്പനാട്ടു കായൽ Vembanad Kayal ) is the longest lake in India and the second largest lake in the state of Kerala .
geography
The Vembanadsee is part of the wetland of the same name ( Vembanad wetland ), which extends over 2033.02 km² (with the associated catchment area 6126.48 km²). The water surface of the lake has decreased considerably in the 20th century (area in 1917, 1970 and 1990: 290.85 km², 227.23 km² and 213.28 km²), which was due to the reclamation of land by polders and the expansion of the port of Kochi (Cochin) between 1917 and 1970. Measured at 1 meter mean sea level , the area and volume of the lake in 2009 were given as 216.53 km² and 611.47 million m³.
The lake and its surroundings are recognized as Wetlands of Outstanding Importance under the Ramsar Convention .
Cities
Over 1.6 million people live on the shores of Lake Vembanad and are directly or indirectly dependent on it for their livelihood.
The port of Kochi is located at the mouth of the lake in the Lackadive Sea in the southern part of the Arabian Sea . The town of Alappuzha (also known as Allepey), sometimes referred to as the "Venice of the East" because of its large network of canals that meander through the city, is located between the lake and the Lackadive Seas. The city of Kottayam is bounded by the Kodoor and Meenachil Rivers and Lake Vembanad.
tourism
The lake is one of the touristic significant backwaters in Kerala. The lake is famous for its scenic beauty and has become a major tourist attraction and is also home to a much-visited bird sanctuary ( Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary ).
