Helmar Helas comes from a Dresden artist family and was the son of the painter Max Helas . His sister Hildegard Helas worked as an artisan. Helmar Helas' children also took up artistic professions: his son Volker Helas is a monument conservator and non-fiction author, his daughter Kristine Wischniowski-Helas is a sculptor, painter and restorer.

After graduating from school, he first completed an apprenticeship as a painter and began studying at the Academy of Applied Arts in Dresden in 1930, then at the Dresden University of Fine Arts . After a brief assignment as a soldier, he was a theater painter in Plauen from 1941 to 1944 and came into contact with glass painting for the first time. After the war he sought contact with church architects and worked a. a. for Fritz Steudtner .

Helmar Helas became known primarily as a glass designer and restorer. After 1945 numerous stained glass windows for Dresden churches were created based on his designs. He was also involved in various restoration work in the preservation of monuments. In addition to the restoration of damaged glass windows and interior designs, there are also artistically interesting new creations from this period, including a. for the choir of the Markuskirche in Dresden-Pieschen and the Kreuzkapelle Mauersberg . At the suggestion of its founder, the Dresden Kreuzkantor Rudolf Mauersberger , the latter received not only religious motifs but also references to the interrelationship between religiosity and local tradition. For the Schützkapelle of the Kreuzkirche in Dresden, Helas created the stained glass window with depictions of the destroyed Dresden workplaces of Heinrich Schütz .

In the 1960s, Helmar Helas devoted himself to restoration work and, together with the Institute for Monument Preservation, developed modern methods for professional color analysis in art-historically important rooms. He first practiced this during the restoration of the George Bähr Church in Schmiedeberg (Dippoldiswalde) . As one of the first, Helas dealt with the restoration of elements of the previously little appreciated historicism (painting of the Trinity Church in Riesa). His last major commissions included the preparation of the restoration of the proscenium frieze in the auditorium of the Dresden Semperoper as well as studies for the reconstruction of the opera house's decorative curtain. His grave is in the Striesener Friedhof in Dresden.
