The Markuskirche is a Protestant church in the Dresden district of Pieschen . It is on St. Mark's Square between Bürgerstraße, Torgauer and Osterbergstraße. The church is named after the evangelist Mark .

history

Pieschen was cleared out of the parish of Kaditz in 1884 because of the increase in population and formed its own parish . Then from 1886 to 1888 the architect Christian Schramm built the Markuskirche in the neo-Gothic style.

During the air raids on Dresden in February 1945, high explosive bombs damaged the Markuskirche. However, it could still be used. The Dresden painter Helmar Helas replaced the destroyed church windows with his own designs until 1951. The roof, tower dome, and statues were also repaired. In the 1960s, the interior of the church was extensively renovated and, from 1978, the exterior facade.

The Markuskirche has belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Laurentius Congregation since 1999.

construction

The Markuskirche has a capacity of 900 people. The red brick building has a 45 meter high tower. There have been four prophet statues at the portal since 1891. Robert Henze created them from French limestone. These represent the prophets Isaiah , Jeremiah , Ezekiel and Daniel . A winged lion , the symbol of the evangelist Mark, is attached above the portal .

Interior design

The altar with carved communion relief and the pulpit with depictions of the four evangelists are by Oskar Rassau .

The organ was made by the company Eule Orgelbau Bautzen , it has a rare mechanical cone chest. The organ has 26  registers and 1539 pipes and was characterized by a romantic sound. Due to numerous modifications, a complete restoration of the instrument was necessary.

The three cast steel bells in the church tower were cast in Bochum in 1929 .
