Witzelsberg is located about 7½ kilometers southeast of Freistadt in the Feldaist valley , halfway between Lasberg and St. Leonhard in the southeast, on the Leonhard side of Braunberg  ( 912  m above sea level ) and Sattlerberg  ( 860  m above sea level ), at heights at 850  m above sea level A.

The two villages have around 20 buildings with around 70 inhabitants. The local area includes the place Witzelsberg itself (9 addresses, approx. 30 inhabitants), which belongs to St. Oswald, the individual layers brown nearby, and also the Lasberger farms Untersteininger, Obersteininger, Fichs, Sattler, Holzgattler and Stauda (Ober-, Unterstaudinger ) in the southeast, and the Braunberghütte  ( 902  m above sea level ), also in the municipality of Lasberg west of the village.

Witzelsberg belonged to the local community of Wartberg , which was founded in 1850 and was divided into the two communities of St. Oswald and Lasberg as early as 1874.

The area is a popular hiking and mountain biking area. With the Alpenvereinshütte on Braunberg, the Braunberghütte , there is an important base here. Two European trails cross here , the E6 (Finland – Turkey, here Austrian long-distance hiking trail 05, the north-south trail and also the Nordwaldkammweg , coming from Bad Leonfelden – Freistadt further up into the Waldviertel ) and E8 (Ireland – Turkey, here also 170, from Kefermarkt via Liebenau to the Waldviertel).
