history

The parish and community area of St. Oswald has been cleared and settled from the south, from Gutau, but mainly from Lasberg. In 1125 a small Niederwald settlement was mentioned for the first time , which was later named “St. Oswald ”received. In 1260 the Church of St. Oswald is mentioned for the first time in a document in the Diocese of Passau, although the church can be around 100 years older. The parish church, which was initially subordinate to the parish of Gutau, was built under the direction of the sovereign and with robot services. In the years 1408 to 1432 the Zelkinger ( Schloss Weinberg ) acquired areas in what is now the municipality that were previously owned by the rulers. The church was destroyed in the Hussite Wars in 1426. Around 1480 the parish changed hands, which 50 years later blocked the church insignia and thus St. Made fair impossible. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .

As early as 1570, the St. Oswalders wanted to set up their own parish, but the sovereign always refused, as he feared the appointment of a Protestant pastor by Bailiff Zelking. St. Oswald had 48 houses at that time. Nevertheless, in 1589, against the will of the sovereign, a separate pastor was appointed. During the Upper Austrian Peasants' War , the church of St. Oswald was destroyed by Lasberger Protestants. Furthermore, farmers and citizens who did not want to participate were forced to take part in the siege of Freistadt . So among the 15,000 farmers who besieged the princely city were many farmers from St. Oswald. During the Thirty Years' War , armies of knights moved through today's municipality and devastated the area. In the 16th century, the existing healing springs were used many times. In 1698 the parish of St. Oswald became independent.

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times. Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After Austria was annexed to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the "Gau Oberdonau". After 1945, Upper Austria was restored and the infrastructure was expanded.

In 1951 the parish was renamed from St. Oswald to St. Oswald bei Freistadt .

Coat of arms of St. Oswald near Freistadt

The municipal coat of arms shows :

In blue on a green shield base, a silver tower held by two golden, red-tongued, erect lions with a red, closed gate and red onion roof with lantern, black open window and tower clock.

The tower represents the market tower, which burned down in 1864 and which stood in the center of the village at the time. The lions were probably shield holders and thus found their way into the coat of arms.
