from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The football league system in Austria is a league system for division of Austrian football - leagues . The top division in Austrian football is therefore the Bundesliga (Austria) , in which the Austrian football champion is determined.

Current league system

The top division in Austria is the Tipico Bundesliga , colloquially mostly known as the Bundesliga . Among them there is a second national division, the 2nd division , as well as a three-track regional division (east, middle, west) as a semi-professional third level. Each of the three regional leagues comprises three regional associations, each organizing a national league as the fourth level.

Organization and licensing

The respective leagues are organized by the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) or its regional associations. In principle, the scope of the national associations comprising the respective State , but there are exceptions due to geographical conditions: for example, include the associations of East Tyrol , instead of the Tyrolean Football Federation (TFV) the Carinthian Football Association (PRR) and some clubs from the Upper Austrian border regions of Salzburg and Lower Austria are not to the Upper Austrian Football Association (OÖFV), but to the Salzburg Football Association (SFV) or the Lower Austrian Football Association (NÖFV). Licenses in the Bundesliga and the First League are issued by the Austrian Football League Association .

Game operation

Tipico Bundesliga

The Bundesliga is the highest football class in the Austrian football system, in which 12 professional teams play for the Austrian state championship. All teams play against each other in a round-trip round of 11 matches, each team has 11 home and 11 away games throughout the season. Then the best 6 teams play in the "master group", the remaining 6 teams in the "qualification group". There are 5 home and 5 away games to be played. The total number of games is thus 32 excl possible. Europa League - Play-off games. At the end of the season, the team placed last in the "qualification group" is relegated and replaced by the first team in the second division.

2nd league

The next lower league is the 2nd league, which is also part of professional football. In the first division, 16 teams play against each other twice. The first placed will be promoted directly to the Bundesliga, the last placed and the two penultimate will be relegated directly to their respective regional league.

Regional league

The Regionalliga represents the highest Austrian amateur class. The game is played in three seasons of 16 teams each. The division of these scales is based on the affiliation to the respective regional association, which in turn is made according to geographical aspects. The Regionalliga Ost includes the clubs of the Lower Austrian, Burgenland and Vienna Football Associations and the Regionalliga Mitte includes the Styrian, Upper Austrian and Carinthian Football Associations (the latter including the clubs from East Tyrol). In western Austria, the clubs of the Vorarlberg, Salzburg and Tyrolean football associations play in a nationwide regional league.

The composition of the squadrons is based solely on association membership. It is therefore possible that more teams are relegated to one regional league than another. Viewed per regional league, either no club or up to two clubs can be added. The champions of the regional leagues in the middle and east are promoted directly to the second division. In western Austria, an elite league is played at regional league level. In the autumn round, a regional / elite league will be played nationwide in Vorarlberg, Salzburg and Tyrol. The first two placed teams will play in an elite league playoff in the spring for promotion to the second division. Amateur teams of professional clubs have not been eligible for promotion since the 2010/11 season . The number of relegated members (1 to 3) depends on the number of relegated members from or promoted to the 2nd division.

National league

Below the regional leagues, the national leagues form the fourth division. The names of the regional leagues vary depending on the association: Admiral Wiener Stadtliga (Vienna), 1. NÖN-Landesliga (Lower Austria), BVZ Burgenlandliga (Burgenland), Sparkassen Landesliga (Styria), OÖ Liga (Upper Austria), Kärntner Liga (Carinthia), Salzburg League (Salzburg), UPC Tyrolean League (Tyrol), Vorarlbergliga (Vorarlberg)

The champions of each regional league are promoted directly to the associated regional league. The number of relegated members from the regional league to the regional league can be two to five due to the association membership, since the composition of the relays is also exclusively based on association membership.

Below the fourth division

The divisions below the (first) regional leagues are called, depending on the regional association, Oberliga (Styria), 2nd regional league (Lower Austria, Vienna), 1st regional league (Salzburg), 2nd league (Burgenland), regional league (Upper Austria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) or lower league (Carinthia). In most federal states, these are divided into two seasons, Burgenland and Styria even split into three seasons, while Salzburg, Vorarlberg and Vienna manage with a single-track league.

The structure of the regional associations differs considerably:

  • Vienna: The sixth division is called the Oberliga, followed by the 1st and 2nd class (all in 2 seasons).
  • Lower Austria: The sixth division is a regional league with 4 seasons, followed by 1st, 2nd and 3rd class.
  • Burgenland: The sixth and seventh division are the four-track 1st and 2nd classes.
  • Styria: The sixth division is called the lower division, followed by the regional division and a first division.
  • Upper Austria: The sixth division is a four-track district league, followed by a 1st and a 2nd division.
  • Carinthia: The sixth and seventh division are the 1st and 2nd grades, each with 4 relays.
  • Vorarlberg: The sixth to tenth division are the 1st to 5th regional classes, of which only the lowest is not a single track.
  • Tyrol: The sixth division is called the regional league, followed by the district league and the 1st and 2nd grades.
  • Salzburg: The fifth division is the single-track 1st regional league, followed by the 2nd regional league and 1st class (both double-track); including the four-track 2nd class.
