The Salzburg Football Association (SFV) is the association of football clubs in the state of Salzburg and carries out its activities on a non-profit basis. The SFV is a full member of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) and its statutes.
The Salzburg Football Association is responsible for organizing the championships in the individual divisions and organizes the SFV-Stiegl-Cup as well as the indoor state championships and indoor cup tournaments for both the junior and the fighting teams. It currently has 123 clubs with 726 teams, around 25,000 members and 193 referees.
Foundation and the first years
Until 1921 the Football Association for Upper Austria and Salzburg organized all football matters for the two federal states. The first championship was held in the founding year 1919, but took place without Salzburg participation. In 1920 the Salzburg half of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFV; predecessor of today's ÖFB ) achieved extensive autonomy from the Linz- based joint association for Upper Austria and Salzburg . With the 1st Salzburg SK 1919 , the first Salzburg team started in the joint league that year.
Due to the dominance of the Upper Austrian half of the association, an independent football association was formed for the state of Salzburg on April 15, 1921 . Although the Upper Austrian side vehemently opposed this separation, the ÖFV recognized the independence of the Salzburg Football Association in the same year.
As everywhere else in Germany, the association in Salzburg was separated into a general association ( ASFV ) and a workers association ( VAFÖ - Salzburg regional group) in 1926. Many of the still young clubs whose active members mostly came from the working class played in the championships of the VAFÖ (Free Association of Amateur Soccer Clubs in Austria) until 1934, including the SK Vorwärts Maxglan (now ASK Salzburg ) and the 1. Halleiner SK . After the February unrest of 1934, all workers' associations across Austria were threatened with forced liquidation. In order to avoid this fate, most of the Salzburg representatives rejoined the Salzburg Football Association, some under a new club name. In October 1936, the workers' association disbanded nationwide and the dualism came to an end.
During the Second World War, soccer came to a complete standstill in Salzburg, with the exception of youth games. After the war, the Salzburg provincial government set up a provisional management team to reorganize football in the state. In 1946 the Salzburg Football Association was re-established.
In the 1987/88 season , SV Austria Salzburg , FC Salzburg and SAK 1914 were three clubs from the city of Salzburg in the 2nd division , which could never be achieved before or after. In 1993/94 the SFV was able to celebrate the Austrian championship title for the first time, the then Salzburg Austria was crowned champion and later also the UEFA Cup finalist against Inter Milan . The currently most successful Salzburg club is FC Red Bull Salzburg . The legally binding successor to SV Austria Salzburg, founded in 1933, has so far been able to secure 3 championship titles for himself.
