history
Starting in the 1920s until the end of the 1950s, the state cup represented the climax of Vorarlberg football events alongside the championship and was discontinued in 1959 after the Vorarlberg football clubs were integrated into national football. After a 17 year hiatus, the cup was reintroduced in 1977.
- Beginnings until after the Second World War
The first edition of the Landescup took place in 1926 , four years after the Vorarlberg Football Association was founded. The first winner was FC Lustenau 07, the only club to register for the competition, with a victory over its own B-team. Since there were only very few football clubs in Vorarlberg in the 1920s and at that time these were mainly measured against clubs from Germany and Switzerland as part of the " Bodensee Football Association" , and from 1930 to 1933 championship games with the two neighboring countries in the " Bodensee-Kreisliga ", the trophy initially met with little interest. During this time the cup was held anyway and FC Bregenz, FC Dornbirn 1913 and SC Austria Lustenau won.
In the course of the political changes resulting from the annexation of Austria to the German Reich, the Vorarlberg Football Association was dissolved in 1938 and the state cup was discontinued. After the Second World War , the "Vorarlberger Sportverband" organized a championship and the state cup for the 1945/46 season, and the following year the re-established Vorarlberg Football Association took over the organization of the cup competition. Vorarlberg's teams also take part in the Bundesländer Cup , which was reintroduced after the end of the war in 1946 and was abolished again in the course of the State League reform in 1949.
In the years that followed, the Vorarlberg State Cup reached its heyday. The games enjoyed great interest from the public and the title was highly sought after by the clubs. Cup winners during this time were SC Rapid Lustenau, FC Blau-Weiß Feldkirch, SC Admira Dornbirn, SC Austria Lustenau, Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz, FC Dornbirn 1913 and FC Kennelbach.
With the introduction of the second-rate regional league and the champions' right of promotion to the state league , Vorarlberg was finally incorporated into Austrian football from 1960 onwards, and the state cup was discontinued.
- Reintroduced in the 1970s
In 1976 , the association reintroduced the cup competition at the insistence of many club officials, especially smaller clubs. In the year of its reintroduction, Österreichische Lotterien GmbH was able to be won as a sponsor , which has since given the state cup the name VFV- TOTO- Cup. In contrast to the first series of events, the top clubs of the state are no longer eligible to participate since the re-introduction due to their change to professionalism. At the beginning of the competition, FC Rätia Bludenz, SC Austria Lustenau and SC Admira Dornbirn won the trophy.
In the 1980s, the teams from SC Austria Lustenau, the syndicate from Dornbirn and Bregenz, FC Dornbirn 1913, Viktoria Bregenz, SCR Altach and VfB Hohenems were successful. The next ten years produced ten different winners: FC Wolfurt, VfB Hohenems, Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz, SCR Altach, FC Lustenau 07, FC Koblach, VfB Hohenems, FC Lauterach, FC Hard and the second team of Austria Lustenau. The following teams have been on the list of winners since 2000: FC Lustenau 07, SCR Altach, VfB Hohenems, FC Koblach, FC Rot-Weiß Rankweil, FC Blau-Weiß Feldkirch, SC Bregenz, Viktoria Bregenz, FC Dornbirn 1913 and Dornbirner SV.
Name (sponsor)
The cup competition became the Vorarlberger Landespokal in 1925, which was played until 1959. When it was introduced as the VFV Cup in 1976, Österreichische Lotterien GmbH was won as a sponsor and the Vorarlberger Cup is held as the VFV TOTO Cup:
- Vorarlberger Landespokal: 1924 / 25–1958 / 59
- VFV Cup: since 1976/77
- the sponsor is in the signature in connection with 'VFV-Cup':
- VFV TOTO Cup: since 1976/77
Game mode, participants and draw
The VFV-Cup is held in a knockout system. All rounds are decided in one game, up to the round of 16 the club that plays in the lowest division has home rights.
In the regionally drawn first round, the teams from the regional league and the classes below meet each other. From the 5th national class, only the teams that were better placed in the previous championship round are qualified, with the first combat teams being preferred to 1b and 1c teams.
The 14 teams from the Vorarlbergliga join in the second round , while the teams from the Regionalliga West only enter the competition in the third round. From the specified number of 32 participants in this third round - depending on the number of teams from the regional league - the necessary number of games in the first round and thus the number of places for teams from the 5th national class results.
If both clubs play in the same league, the first-named club has home rights at the time of the draw. Home rights are drawn from the round of 16. In the final, the winner of the first semi-final game drawn is considered the home team, the winner of the second semi-final game drawn as the away team. If there is a draw after 90 minutes, the winner will be determined immediately (without extra time) in a penalty shoot-out.
The fourth, fifth and sixth rounds correspond to the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals. The final is organized by the Vorarlberg Football Association and played in the Herrenriedstadion in Hohenems .
