The Working Group for Sport and Physical Culture in Austria - ASKÖ for short - is the largest of the three umbrella sports associations in Austria. It is a former support organization of the SPÖ based in Vienna and is dedicated to the promotion of popular sport, especially in the construction, maintenance, management and operation of sports facilities. The ASKÖ is a leading member of the CSIT , the international association of workers' sports. A total of 110 sports are looked after by the ASKÖ. As many people as possible should be able to practice a wide variety of sports within the ASKÖ. The motto of the organization is "Sport and exercise for everyone from 0-99 years".

The ASKÖ is divided into the federal organization, the nine regional associations and the central associations - ARBÖ , the tourist association Naturefriends Austria , the Association of Austrian Workers' Fishing Associations and the ASKÖ Aviation Association . The ASKÖ currently has around 4,200 member associations nationwide with around 1.2 million members.

history

In 1889 the German Gymnastics Federation was established in Austria in 1889 as the predecessor of today's Austrian Gymnastics Federation , from which the German Workers Gymnastics and Sports Federation separated in 1893 . In 1913 this became a sub-organization of the Social Democratic Party, today's SPÖ .

After the First World War, the peace treaty of St. Germain of September 10, 1919, put an end to Austrian efforts to join the German Reich, mainly for economic reasons. Without its Transleithan territories such as Bohemia, Hungary and large regions of the Balkans, Austria was forced to redefine itself economically and politically as a small state.

On the sporting level, in 1919 the gymnasts, workers' cyclists, the people's armed forces, the Friends of Nature Organization and other organizations formed the Association of Austrian Workers' and Soldiers' Sports Associations (VAS). Its first president was the SDAP member of the National Council Karl Volkert .

On October 26, 1924, the VAS was transformed into a workers' union for sport and physical culture in Austria . The association was dissolved in 1934 and re-established immediately after the Second World War . In 1971 it got its current name.

In 2012 the ASKÖ applied to leave the SPÖ as a “subsidiary organization” and in future will be a friendly organization without direct participation rights (but still with a high level of emotional closeness to the Social Democrats) of the SPÖ.

President of the ASKÖ has been a member of the National Council Hermann Krist since January 2014 .
