The European long-distance footpath E8 is part of the European long-distance footpaths and currently runs from Dursey Head in Ireland to the (closed) Beskid Pass on the Polish - Ukrainian border.

It has not yet been implemented in Ukraine ; its course in Romania has been set since autumn 2017. In Serbia, the E8 follows the E4 through the Balkan Mountains to the Bulgarian border. In Bulgaria , the E8 is only fixed in the Rila Mountains and the Rhodope Mountains . In the future, the E8 will extend as far as Istanbul in Turkey , be continuously accessible and consistently signposted along the entire route. Its total length is then around 7500 km.

The routes in Ireland , England , the Netherlands , Germany , Austria , Slovakia and Poland have been laid out and signposted throughout .

Route

Ireland

In Ireland, the E8 runs through Cahersiveen , Glenbeigh , The Black Valley , Loo Bridge , Millstreet , Glenaknockane , Mallow , Fermoy , Clogheen , Clonmel , Piltown , Inistioge , Borris , Clonegal , Tinahely , Aughavannagh , Laragh , Knockree and Dublin .

Netherlands

After crossing the English Channel by ferry , the Rotterdam Europoort is the first to enter mainland Europe. In the Rotterdam district of Rozenburg , on the bridge over the Hartel Canal , the E8 crosses the European long-distance hiking trails E2 and E9 . In addition, with the city of The Hague, the starting point of the European long-distance hiking trail E11 is relatively close. Nowhere else do four European long-distance hiking trails come so close.

In the Netherlands, the E8 still runs through Maassluis , Overschie , Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel , Kadijk, Ameide , Leerdam , Buurmalsen , Echteld , Hemmen , Nijmegen and Wyler .

Germany

The E8 crosses Germany from northwest to southeast. At the beginning he moves away from the Dutch border, on the western side of the Rhine . At Worms it crosses the Rhine, crosses the Odenwald , follows the Main to Wertheim and then runs to Rothenburg ob der Tauber an der Tauber . From there it goes in a south-easterly direction to the Altmühl in order to reach the Danube at its mouth in Kelheim . From there it extends partially together with the predicate trail Goldsteig the banks of the Danube to Passau .

Austria

In Austria , the E8 runs in an easterly direction, always between the Danube in the south and the border with the Czech Republic in the north. From Nebelstein to Wolfsthal, it is identical to the Eastern Austrian Grenzlandweg 07 . From Vienna , the E8 (parallel to the European long-distance hiking trail E4 ) leads through the Danube floodplains to the border crossing at Berg an der Donau, where the transition to Slovakia takes place (length approx. 69 km).

Slovakia

The Slovak route is 739 kilometers. The E8 runs largely together with the Path of the Heroes of the SNP , the hiking trail commemorating the Slovak National Uprising (Slovenské národné povstanie, SNP). This leads over the main ridge of the Low Tatras . On the section between Dukla Pass and Čergov, it follows the International Mountain Hiking Trail of Friendship Eisenach – Budapest (EB path) .

The Slovak part of the E8 can be divided into different sections:

Poland

The E8 ( red route ) POL Szlak czerwony.svgreaches Poland at the Duklapass . It crosses the Lower and East Beskids , passes through the towns and villages of Dukla , Iwonicz-Zdrój , Pasmo Bukowicy , Komańcza , Cisna , Ustrzyki Górne and Wołosate . It's about 122 kilometers long. The signs for the route end at the Polish-Ukrainian border.

Romania

The Transylvanian Carpathian Association applied for funding for the Romanian section in 2014. Since autumn 2017, the route of the E8 in Romania has now been "officially" determined. The section of the long-distance hiking trail begins at the Ukrainian-Romanian border crossing at Sighetu Marmației ( Marmaroschsiget ) and ends after 1,463 km and more than 63 kilometers of altitude in the triangle with Bulgaria and Serbia at the Danube breakthrough Porțile de Fier ( Iron Gate ) at Drobeta Turnu Severin ( Severin Tower ).

He follows in the Eastern Carpathians the mountain ranges Tibles, Munţii Rodnei ( Rodna ), Suhard, Rarău, Stanisoara, Ceahlău, Hasmas, Tarcău , Ciuc, NEMIRA, Vrancea, Penteleu that Munţii Buzăului by the Eastern Carpathians south and reaches the Piatra Mare ( Hohenstein ) near Brașov .

In Brașov ( Kronstadt ) the E8 changes its direction, rises in the Southern Carpathians (Transylvanian Alps) over the Piatra Craiului ( Königsstein ) to the Făgăraș (Fagaras) high mountains with the highest elevations over 2500 m and exceeds it in its entire length. At Turnu Roșu ( Schweinsdorf ) near Sibiu ( Hermannstadt ) the E8 reaches the valley of the river Olt ( Alt ), in order to ascend directly again to the Lotru and Cindrel ( Zbin ) mountains and to follow its western direction to the stone channel . The E8 turns south and crosses the Retezat Mountains , the last alpine elevation in the Southern Carpathians.

After the descent from Retezat , the E8 runs south through hilly terrain in the Mehedinți Mountains and remains largely below the 1000 m mark. The E8 reaches the Danube at the border crossing at Dobera-Turnu Severin and leaves Romania there.

Serbia

In Serbia , the E8 and the E4 will strive through the Balkan Mountains towards Sofia . The length of the E8 in Serbia is estimated to be 450 km.

Bulgaria

In Bulgaria, the marked course of the E8 begins in the holiday resort Borowez in the Rila Mountains, about 80 km southeast of Sofia , and leads 463 km over the Rhopod Mountains to Mezek near Svilengrad, in the border triangle with Turkey and Greece . After the Rila monastery , the path with the Musala ( 2925  m ) reaches the highest point of its entire route.

Future course

The E8 still has gaps in Ukraine and Turkey . The long-distance hiking trail ends in Swilengrad in the border triangle Bulgaria-Turkey- Greece . In the future, the E8 will also pass through Eastern Thrace in Turkey and end at the Bosporus .
