Tarcău [ tarˈkəu ] (German: Tarkau , Hungarian: Tarkő ) is a municipality in the Neamț district , in the Moldova region , in Romania . The place was named after the river of the same name. The Tarcău municipality also includes the villages of Ardeluța , Brateș , Cazaci , Schitu Tarcău , Straja .

The municipality of Tarcău is located in the historical region of West Moldau in the foothills of the Tarcău Mountains , the mountains Măgura Tarcău (1492 m) and Murgoci (1293 m), a mountain range of the Eastern Carpathians . The village was first mentioned in a medieval document from the Moldavian Prince Stefan the Great from October 10, 1458. At the time of Prince Miron Barnovschi , in the years 1628–1629, the place appeared again in the documents of the time. At the end of the 19th century, the place Tarcău belonged to Pângărați .

At the end of the 19th century, around 400 people and 119 properties were recorded in Tarcău. In the 2002 census, 3552 Romanians , four Magyars and four Roma were registered in the area of ​​today's municipality .
