Bicaz ( Hungarian Békás ) is a town in the county Neamţ in the West of Moldova in Romania .

location

Bicaz is located on the eastern edge of the Ceahlău Mountains , which are part of the Eastern Carpathians . On the national roads Drum național 12C and Drum național 15 , the city is about 25 kilometers to the west of the district capital Piatra Neamț .

history

Bicaz was a village until 1960, when the place was raised to a city in connection with the creation of the Izvorul Muntelui reservoir on the Bistrița (Bistritz).

population

The city has 8428 inhabitants; 96.02% of them are Romanians and 3.61% Roma ; 0.37% belong to other ethnic groups. Accordingly, 96.58% of the population are Romanian Orthodox and 1.69% Roman Catholic (all data from 2002).

Attractions

The lime processed in Bicaz is mined west of the city just before the entrance to the Bicaz Gorge. The Peştera Munticelu stalactite cave is also located in this area . Through the deeply cut gorge of the 10-kilometer-long Bicaz Gorge ( Cheile Bicazului ), the rock walls of which sometimes rise more than 100 meters vertically, a pass road leads in a south-westerly direction up to the Red Lake ( Lacul Roșu ) about 30 kilometers away . This was dammed in 1837 by a landslide. The stumps of the trees still protrude from the lake today.

About four kilometers to the north is the Izvorul Muntelui reservoir , the largest in Romania. Here you have a far-reaching view of the Eastern Carpathians .
