The reservoir Izvorul Muntelui , also Lacul Bicaz , is a reservoir through which the Bistrița flows north of Bicaz in the Neamț district in Romania . It is the largest reservoir located entirely within Romania.
description
The reservoir is used to generate electricity in the Bicaz-Stejaru hydropower plant . The power plant has three turbines, an output of 210 MW and generates an average of 500 GWh per year. The maximum storage volume of the lake is 1250 million cubic meters.
The lake is a popular tourist destination in the region, especially in summer when visitors take the ferry from Bicaz for a short excursion on the lake to take in the magnificent views of the Ceahlău massif ( Eastern Carpathians ) on the west bank. In the 1960s and 1970s there was a regular ferry service between the port of Bicaz and the villages on the banks of the lake.
In Potoci, a few kilometers north of the town of Bicaz, there is a biological research facility with a small dive center for underwater exploration. This facility was visited by the marine biologist Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1984.
