Brezová pod Bradlom (until 1927 Brezová in Slovak ; German birch grove , Hungarian Berezó - until 1907 Brezova ) is a city in western Slovakia .
Location and general
The small town was first mentioned in 1262 under the German name Birkenhain (see Deutsche Ostsiedlung ) and is about 23 kilometers east of Senica and 12 kilometers south of the district town of Myjava at the northern end of the Little Carpathians . The place received its city rights in 1709. In the middle of the 19th century the city was a center of supporters of Ľudovít Štúr and from 1848–1849 one of the centers of the Slovak uprising .
The "local mountain" is the Bradlo (543 meters).
In the immediate vicinity, in Košariská , is the birthplace of Milan Rastislav Štefánik , a Slovak politician and general from the First World War . After his death in 1919, he was buried in a memorial tomb designed by the famous architect Dušan Jurkovič on the Bradlo (built 1927–1928).
Attractions
- Catholic church with fortifications from 1590. It was originally built by Protestants, but they lost the church to the Catholics twice in the course of their history (see Counter-Reformation ). Inside there is a Rococo interior from 1773.
- Protestant tolerance church from 1783–85, it has three galleries, a tower from 1795, which was redesigned in 1893 neo-baroque .
