The Rila Mountains ( bulgar. Рила ) are a mountain range in southwestern Bulgaria . The highest peak is the Musala with a height of 2925 m. Rila is the highest mountain range on the Balkan Peninsula .
The image of the Rila Mountains is characterized by almost always snow-capped peaks, jagged rock shapes, deep gorges and icy mountain lakes. There are also a variety of mineral springs in the mountains . The hottest spring (102 ° C) is in Sapareva Banya . The Rila Monastery is embedded in the forest-covered mountain slopes . The winter sports centers of Bansko and Raslog are located on the southern edge of the mountains .
The biodiversity in the mountains is great. One finds u. a. Bears, wild boars, lynxes, goats, deer, falcons and eagles.
In the Rila there are more than 150 lakes at altitudes between 2100 and 2500 m. The highest of these is at 2709 m at the foot of the Musala. The Rila Mountains are the origin of the Mariza , Iskar and Mesta rivers .
