City history

Glantane East is a complex of ancient monuments at Boherboy, near town. Millstreet was built in the 18th century around an old mill , which is where the town got its name. The place became the center of church life in a larger area. The central building of the city is the Catholic Church , which is dedicated to St. Patrick . The city continued to grow and agriculture became more and more important; especially leather-making cattle were sold throughout Ireland. In addition, brick- making factories , weaving mills and breweries were built. The weaving mills existed until around 1890, the other branches of the economy still play a major role in the city today.

In 1810 a large barracks was built in Millstreet , later also a courthouse, but nowadays there are no negotiations. On April 16, 1853, the city was connected to the rail network; however, since 1976 Millstreets station has no longer been approved for freight traffic. Millstreet is also a stop on the E8 European long-distance footpath .

Media presence

In 1993 the city attracted national and international attention when the Eurovision Song Contest was held at the Green Glens Arena in Millstreet. To this day it is the smallest town that has ever hosted the competition. The media presence led to a significant upturn in the tourism sector, which lasted for several years.

Larger sporting events also take place regularly: Steve Collins fought twice for the world title in boxing in the middleweight division in Millstreet and from 1992 to 2000 world cup jumping took place here. In July 2006, the 29th European Juggling Meeting was hosted with over 2000 participants. The 37th European Juggling Meeting took place again in July 2014 in Millstreet.

Town twinning

Since October 1985 there has been a twinning with Pommerit le Vicomte in Brittany in France .
