The route continues over the Thuringian Slate Mountains , Vogtland , Ore Mountains , Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland , Lusatian Mountains , Jeschken Mountains , Jizera Mountains , Bober-Katzbach Mountains , Glatzer Schneegebirge , Jeseníky Mountains , Beskids , Mala Fatra , Mátra and Bükk to Budapest .

history

In May 1980 the XIV International Tourist Meeting of Friendship took place in Eisenach and Wilhelmsthal with the participation of large delegations from Czechoslovakia and the People's Republic of Poland . The Kulturbund der DDR , Fachgruppe Wander und Touristik, organized the event, with the idea of creating a long-distance hiking trail within the socialist community of states. Initially it was even planned to extend the trail to the Black Sea in order to include Romania and Bulgaria .

On May 28, 1983, the mountain hiking trail was opened in Eisenach with a ceremony at the Wartburg . After a speech by Kulturbund officials and the director of the Wartburg, the first stage to the Großer Inselsberg was “hiked” together. Numerous foreign hikers from the Czech Československý svaz tělesné výchovy (ČSTV), the Polish Polskie Towarzystwo Turystyczno-Krajoznawcze (PTTK) and the Hungarian Magyar Természetbarát Szövetség (MTSZ) also took part in this premiere . In October 1983 the Hungarian section was opened in Budapest, which is also the eastern part of the national long-distance hiking trail Országos Kéktúra .

Until 1989, the Mountain Hiking Trail of Friendship was the only cross-border long-distance hiking trail in the former socialist states of the GDR, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. Only in Bulgaria was a similar project implemented with the Kom-Emine mountain hiking trail , which for political reasons did not find a connection to the neighboring countries.

The Erfurt hiker Wolfgang Buchenau was the first to master the entire route in the summer of 1987 - and even to do so continuously without interruption. It took him 74 days.

After the removal of the Iron Curtain , most of the EB trail was integrated into the European long-distance hiking trail E3 . (The E8 runs on a smaller section in Slovakia , and the Hungarian part is part of the E4 .) Today, the EB path is part and supplement of the E3, although it has retained its own route in Thuringia and Saxony. As a result, it is still very well known in Germany, while the EB logo towards the east has largely been replaced by the E3 logo.
