It rises near the church of St. Michael in Oberrauchenödt (municipality of Grünbach ) at an altitude of 880 meters, east of the district capital Freistadt , and flows in a north-westerly curve to Rainbach . In contrast to the somewhat longer eastern Waldaist (56 km), the western Feldaist has no source rivers.

The following section to Freistadt is called Thurytal , then continues in a southerly direction, past Kefermarkt and Pregarten , and joins the Waldaist to Aist at Hohensteg in the municipality of Schwertberg , which finally flows into the Danube . The Feldaist drains an area of 265.5 km².

A hiking trail runs along the Feldaist between Kefermarkt and the Kriehmühle near Wartberg.
