Beginning of the Thury Valley

Thurytal is the name of the partly natural, partly renatured valley of the Feldaist in Upper Austria's Mühlviertel from Freistadt to Neumühle in the district of Helbetschlag , municipality of Grünbach .

A cross-border history and culture hiking trail begins in Freistadt and leads along the river to the Czech Republic , which is of historical importance as the former salt route from the Danube to Bohemia . The Thurytal section is themed "Business on the River" and documents the traditional history of the numerous mills and hammer mills , some of which have been reconstructed for tourist purposes as part of a Euregio project.

At the beginning of the 19th century, French entrenchments were built, of which the remains of the simple weir ditches are still visible.

Origin of name

In the heyday of the three Thuryhammers, around 20 blacksmiths were busy producing the scythes . Back then, around the 18th century, the hammers were operated by a water wheel . The Thury family came to Freistadt around 1729 and owned the hammer mills that gave the valley its current name. Two members of the Thury family were also mayors of the city of Freistadt.

With the beginning of industrialization, the decline of the Thuryhammers came around 1870.
