List of mayors of Freistadt

List of mayors of Freistadt since 1388.

Mayor in the late Middle Ages

In the 14th century, Freistadt was the only one of the seven princely cities of the "Land ob der Enns" to have the right to appoint a mayor from among the city's citizens. From 1388 on, the names of the mayors of Freistadt are known in almost closed order. In the beginning, several mayors often appear next to each other. The office and duties of the mayor (superordinate to the city judge) are only precisely defined in the city regulations of May 14, 1447. The same councilors often took turns in the offices of mayor and city judge, so that some of them were mayors (and city judges several times). In the Middle Ages these people belonged to the city nobility, in the 16th and 17th centuries they mostly came from the merchant class.
