Josef Knoll (politician)

Josef Knoll (born November 11, 1926 in Leopoldschlag ; † January 10, 2013 in Abu Dhabi ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and state official. In 1971 he was a short-term member of the National Council and from 1971 to 1984 a member of the Federal Council and served as Chairman of the Federal Council in 1979 and 1984.

education and profession

From 1932 to 1937 Knoll attended elementary school in Leopoldschlag, his birthplace. He then moved to the Federal Educational Institute in Traiskirchen and the Realgymnasium in Freistadt , where he took his high school diploma in 1943 . In 1948 he passed the state accounting examination. Professionally, Knoll worked after the Second World War as a civil servant in the Office of the Upper Austrian Provincial Government, where he was employed by the Freistadt District Commission from 1946 to 1983. There he held the position of head of the welfare office and the district retirement homes in Freistadt and Lasberg . In 1983 he was given the professional title of government councilor.

Politics and functions

Knoll began his political career in the local politics of the city of Freistadt. Here he was elected to the city council in 1961 and was promoted to deputy mayor in 1969. As a result, he directed the fortunes of the city of Freistadt as mayor between 1973 and 1987. Within the party, Knoll held the role of city party chairman of the Austrian People's Party Freistadt between 1967 and 1988, and he was also the district chairman of the ÖAAB Freistadt in the Austrian Workers' Association (ÖAAB). Knoll was also involved in the trade union movement and from 1960 was chairman of the Christian trade unionists group in the Freistadt district. Furthermore, he was President of the Mühlviertler Messe from 1973 to 1996 and was Chairman of the Board of Management of Sparkasse Freistadt from 1973 to 1987.

He represented the Austrian People's Party for a short time between May 10, 1971 and November 4, 1971 in the National Council and was then a member of the Federal Council from November 15, 1971 to June 30, 1984. He chaired the Federal Council from October 25, 1979 to December 31, 1979 and from January 1, 1984 to June 30, 1984.
