Parish Church of St. Hubertus

St. Hubertus is a Catholic parish in the district of Weisser Hirsch in Dresden . It is structurally represented by the St. Hubertus Chapel, which was built 1936–1937 according to plans by the Dresden architect Robert Witte . Along with the parish hall of the Christ Church and the Hope Church , the chapel is one of the few sacred buildings that were erected in Dresden between 1933 and 1945 and is an example of “ homeland-related architecture ”. The chapel is a listed building .

It has been used as a parish church since 1957.

Building history

Interior after the remodeling

In 1928 a building site on the edge of the densely wooded Dresdner Heide was acquired, and the plans were completed in 1931. However, the construction project was delayed due to financial problems, and construction could not begin until 1936. The foundation stone was laid on September 20, 1936 together with the altar consecration, around four months later in January 1937 when the chapel was completed, the benediction took place . The location on the White Deer near the forests of the Dresden Heath was decisive for the choice of St. Hubertus as namesake, who was converted while hunting by a stag with a cross between the antlers.

A stepped tower, small arched windows and a saddle roof characterize the external appearance of the building, while the interior is determined by the south-facing choir, the font and the colorfully painted wooden ceiling. There is St. Hubertus can be seen surrounded by geometric ornaments. The original furnishings (pulpit, benches, organ parapet and communion bench) were brought here from the St. Benno High School in 1936.

At Christmas 1956, three bells of the Schilling & Lattmann foundry were inaugurated. Also in 1956 the organ was acquired by the Jehmlich company by the municipality.

These were removed during the interior renovation carried out in 1975–1979 according to the design by Lothar Gonschor : The original high altar and the two artificial stone side altars were removed, the organ was subjected to a general overhaul and the defective bell was replaced by a new bronze bell. The altar cross comes from Peter Makolies . The five windows in the east were enlarged downwards by a field and the ceiling paintings were repainted and changed in color.

The interior of the church was redesigned in white and gold in 2007 based on a design by Wolfgang Löser . The new altar design includes two relics of St. Donata and St. Innocent, which still come from the chapel of the old St. Benno grammar school.

The illustration was painted by the Russian painter Alexander Stoljarov in the style of Russian icons and consecrated in January 2012.
