Winfried Nerdinger (born August 24, 1944 in Burgau ) is a German architectural historian. He was professor for the history of architecture and building construction at the Technical University of Munich and is director of the visual arts department of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and an extraordinary member of the Association of German Architects (BDA). Until September 30, 2012 he was director of the Architecture Museum at the Technical University of Munich . He was appointed TUM Emeritus of Excellence for his outstanding scientific achievements. From October 2012 to April 2018 he was founding director of the NS Documentation Center in Munich. He has been President of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts since July 2019 .

Life

Winfried Nerdinger is the son of the commercial graphic artist Eugen Nerdinger, who was active in the Marxist workers' resistance against National Socialism . He completed his studies in architecture in 1971 as a graduate engineer and received his doctorate in art history at the Technical University of Munich under Josef Adolf Schmoll called Eisenwerth in 1979 on the subject of Rudolf Belling and the art movements in Berlin 1919–1923 (awarded the first-time doctoral prize awarded by the Technical University of Munich ).

Since 1986 he has been Professor of Architectural History at the Technical University of Munich. He was also visiting professor at Harvard University and the University of Helsinki and Cummings lecturer at McGill University in Montreal. On September 30, 2012, Nerdinger retired . As a “TUM Emeritus of Excellence”, he remains actively involved in the Technical University. In the 2015/16 winter semester, Nerdinger held the Otto von Freising visiting professorship at the Catholic University of Eichstätt . In 2016 he gave the White Rose Memorial Lecture.

From 1989 to 2012 Nerdinger was director of the architecture museum at the Technical University of Munich . When he came to what was then the architecture collection after studying architecture, it was in a storage room above the library and in a rented apartment on Augustenstrasse and housed just a handful of models and around 150,000 plans. When he retired in 2012, Nerdinger collected more than 1,100 models, 550,000 plans, 200,000 photographs and countless archive materials and thus established the most important special and research archive for architecture in Germany at the Technical University of Munich.

In 1995 Nerdinger also became director of the Schwaben Architecture Museum in Augsburg. Since 2004 he has also been director of the visual arts department of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and since 2006 chairman of the Alvar Aalto Society .

From October 1, 2012 to April 2018, Winfried Nerdinger was founding director of the NS Documentation Center in Munich. In 1988 he was a member of the initiative group that called for the establishment of the building and, as founding director, was in charge of the content of the new building, which was opened on April 30, 2015 with a ceremony on Munich's Königsplatz.

With his books, writings and exhibitions, Nerdinger made decisive contributions to research into the history of art and architecture as well as to public awareness of the importance of architecture. Recently, Nerdinger has dealt increasingly with the hotly debated topic of reconstruction .

Honors

Winfried Nerdinger is a bearer of the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of the White Rose of the Republic of Finland and in 2006 received the Architecture Prize of the City of Munich . In addition, the Lord Mayor of Munich Christian Ude presented him with the gold medal “ Munich shines - The Friends of Munich” (cultural award of the Bavarian state capital Munich) for his services as an architectural scientist. In 2009 Winfried Nerdinger was awarded the Leo von Klenze Medal , which has been awarded since 1996 for outstanding achievements in architecture, residential and urban development, and civil engineering. In April 2011 Winfried Nerdinger received the Bavarian Architecture Prize and the Bavarian State Prize for Architecture . The Bavarian Chamber of Architects and the Bavarian State Government recognize Nerdinger's special commitment as an architectural historian and director of the Architecture Museum of the Technical University of Munich, as well as his services to architecture and building culture in Bavaria. He has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2015 .

In 2017, Nerdinger was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany with the Order of Merit . On September 13, 2017, he received the "Bene Merito", the highest Polish medal of honor awarded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland.
