The Schwaben Architecture Museum in Augsburg serves to research, document and convey the architectural history of Swabia , but is also an exhibition and event location for all areas of architecture . It is located in the listed villa of the Buchegger family of architects in the Thelottviertel district of Augsburg . The Thelottviertel, designed by Sebastian Buchegger and created between 1907 and 1929, is known as Germany's first garden city .

The museum has existed since 1995 as a branch of the Architecture Museum of the Technical University of Munich . The facility was financed by the Arno Buchegger Foundation, Augsburg, until 2019.

The museum has been temporarily closed since December 2019.

Mission of the museum

The central task of the Architecture Museum Swabia is to research and document the development of architecture in the Swabian region since 1800 and to communicate it to an interested public. The results of the scientific research work are published in an in-house series and presented in exhibitions.

The second focus of the museum's work is the implementation of temporary exhibitions that are intended to bring a wide range of topics and development trends in architecture closer to a broad audience. In addition, guided tours, lectures, architecture talks and other events are offered. The Architekturmuseum Schwaben is an open and independent forum for all friends of architecture, which aims to promote an objective discussion of historical and current issues in architecture.

history

In 17 years, the founding director Winfried Nerdinger designed over 80 exhibitions, published in catalogs, published a series of publications in 10 volumes and created an archive with the estates of important Swabian architects.

The very first exhibition focused on the then sensational design by Peter Zumthor for the Berlin project "Topography of Terror" - also to stimulate a discussion about the establishment of a documentation center on the history of National Socialism in Bavaria. Andres Lepik (professor at the Technical University of Munich ) has directed the museum since October 2012 .

Closure and redesign

After long-standing differences between the sponsor (the Architekturmuseum der TU München) and the sponsor (the Arno Buchegger Foundation), Andres Lepik terminated the contract with the foundation with the intention of encouraging a new start with a new concept for the museum. It was announced in July 2019 that the museum would be closing at the end of the year.

The closure is said to be temporary. A new museum concept is being planned under the name “ZfA Augsburg - Center for Architecture Augsburg”.
