Peter Zumthor
Peter Zumthor (born April 26, 1943 in Basel ) is an internationally active Swiss architect and former monument conservator at the monument office in his canton of Grisons in Chur .
Life
Peter Zumthor was born in Basel in 1943 as the son of master carpenter Oscar Zumthor. He completed his first apprenticeship as a cabinet maker with his father, then he studied interior architecture and design at the Basel School of Applied Arts and architecture and industrial design at the Pratt Institute in New York . For ten years he worked as an employee in the preservation of monuments in the canton of Graubünden. Peter Zumthor lives and works in Haldenstein near Chur and has been running his own architectural office there with around 35 employees since 1979.
During his time as a monument conservator, he preserved historical buildings in alpine side valleys, such as the Val Lumnezia .
In the architectural scene, Zumthor is seen as a loner who places particular emphasis on the selection of the materials used - as well as on the shapes, so that no two buildings he designed are alike.
In 1993 Zumthor won the architecture competition in Berlin for the memorial and the Nazi documentation center Topography of Terror . After the originally planned 22.5 million euros building costs had become 38.8 million euros, a feasibility study put possible additional costs at 3 to 5 million euros. With this reason given, the state of Berlin announced Zumthor in May 2004 and re-announced the competition. In the dispute over the demolition of the towers that had already been built, the country was also able to prevail against Zumthor.
Peter Zumthor was a professor at the Accademia di Architettura of the Università della Svizzera italiana in Mendrisio . In 2009 he was awarded a major architecture prize, the Pritzker Prize, for his life's work .
family
He is married to Annalisa Zumthor-Cuorad , a writer of Romansh literature, and has three adult children with her. Zumthor plays jazz with the double bass in his spare time . His son Peter Conradin Zumthor is a music teacher and jazz drummer, he plays in the Lucas Niggli Drum Quartet , among others .
Architectural model collection
The Kunsthaus Bregenz (KUB) has a collection of over 300 architectural models by Zumthor, which have been archived by the KUB since the solo exhibition there in 2007. They concern both realized and non-built projects. New models are constantly being added. Since 2012, part of this collection has been exhibited in the post office next to the Kunsthaus.
