The Werkraum Bregenzerwald is a cooperation of craftsmen in the Bregenzerwald founded in 1999 . Organized in an association, the Werkraum Bregenzerwald offers its members institutionalized support in the areas of member service, product and design innovation, education and training, and building culture. Today the association is internationally recognized as a model for new crafts .

Club goals

The aims of the Werkraum Bregenzerwald are to present and convey the achievements of its members, to promote building culture in cooperation with architects, and to increase design competence and quality of craftsmanship, preferably involving young people. The Werkraum Bregenzerwald initiates and organizes projects on the subjects of design and training, be it competitions, exhibitions or other joint activities. The initiative sees itself as a source of inspiration and a platform for the trade. It shows the latest developments and current issues in the mirror of the regional cultural heritage and makes them public. As a motor for innovation and growth, the Werkraum places the connection of craft with design and new technologies, the strengthening of project-related and cross-company cooperation at the center of its activities.

The work of the members of the association is praised for having a common "own design language that is very careful with the vocabulary of the design tradition" and for the "formal consistency and rigor", and as far as building design is concerned, they are assigned to the New Vorarlberger Building School . Works such as those of the design brand schmidinger.modul (e.g. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , Austrian Cultural Institute New York) or the industrial designer Robert Rüf have received international attention.

In addition to the permanent exhibition in its own framework and special exhibitions, the Werkraum is also present internationally, in exhibition participations, trade fair appearances and its own exhibitions.

Members

The Werkraum Bregenzerwald currently has 89 members. Broken down by industry, the share of wood processing industries is a good 40%. Almost 60% are from the building trade, plumbing and electrical engineering, metal and glass construction, from the clothing, shoes and jewelry industries. Further representatives are painters, coopers, stove builders, upholsterers, stone masons and new service providers. The members are classic craft businesses, medium-sized, usually family-run companies, some with a rich tradition.

Workroom house

In 2008, the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor received the planning order for a meeting place and for a shop window on the craft culture of the Werkraum Bregenzerwald. The craftsmen from the Bregenz Forest got to know Zumthor while building the Kunsthaus Bregenz (1990–1997). Since then he has been working with companies in the valley. In 2006 he was chairman of the jury for the “Handwerk + Form” competition.

The visionary design of the Werkraum Haus is based on two basic ideas: On the one hand it serves as a meeting place and on the other hand as a large showcase, as a shop window for the craft culture in the Bregenzerwald. This is expressed by a wide roof made of wood and a facade made of glass. The separation between inside and outside is removed, the landscape seems to flow through the house. The building was built by the Werkraum craftsmen and is a stage for the craft with a variety of uses. The open and flexible hall offers 700 square meters of space for exhibitions and events.

Craft + form

Handwerk + Form is a design competition and will be held for the seventh time in 2015. The competition with the exhibition tour was founded over two decades ago at the suggestion of the Andelsbuch craftsmen's association in the Bregenzerwald, in collaboration with graphic designer Harry Metzler.

The Werkraum Bregenzerwald has been holding the competition every three years since 2000, bringing together the knowledge of the craftsmen with the aesthetic drafts of the architects, designers and designers and providing innovative impulses for building and living culture. This creates inspiring objects and furnishings as well as detailed solutions for buildings and houses. A competent jury of experts evaluates and awards the submissions according to the principles of material, form and function, in a context suitable for everyday use. All submissions are exhibited in a village tour through Andelsbuch, in abandoned saws and barns, forges and bakeries, in the ambience of old workshops. The public presentation of all submissions received a lot of attention from the population and the specialist press. The prizes from these competitions bought by the Vorarlberg Museum have been on view in the Schaulager of the Werkraum Haus since 2013.

All Bregenzerwald craft businesses and all domestic and foreign architects and designers who develop a workpiece together with a craftsman from the Bregenzerwald are admitted to the competition. All submissions will be shown in an accompanying exhibition. The extraordinary presentation in former workshops and exemplary renovated houses takes visitors on an attractive tour through the entire village. The starting point and meeting point is the Werkraum Haus.

Lädolar workshop

The teaching of crafts to children and young people is an essential part of the workshop program. The Werkraum Lädolar is a display and learning mobile for apprenticeships in the craft. The development and manufacture of these mobile teaching containers is in the hands of apprentices, masters and designers. Working together, they make the variety of materials, techniques and applications in the craft visible and understandable and open up new approaches to work and teaching. The Lädolar can be used wherever concentrated and experienced knowledge of the craft professions is needed and can be borrowed on request. With the Werkraum Lädolar , the Werkraum Bregenzerwald received a nomination for the Austrian State Prize for Design 2009.

Werkraum children's construction site

The children's construction site arose from the desire to bring the fascination of the craft to children and young people as early as possible and to offer them playful opportunities to lend a hand. The five workshops (wood workshop, water workshop, earthworks workshop, metal workshop and painting workshop) enable the children to get to know and use different materials. Depending on their age and interests, the children can work freely or experience their technical precision. For children aged 5–12. Depending on the exhibition, there is an accompanying program for children, all parts of the children's construction site can be borrowed, such as the Lädolar workshop.
