The Caplutta Sogn Benedetg (Chapel of Saint Benedict ) stands above the village of Sumvitg in the Surselva in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .

When an avalanche destroyed the old chapel in 1984 , the Disentis monastery, as the owner, decided to build a new chapel. The winner of an architecture competition was Peter Zumthor , who built the new chapel in 1988. The investment costs amounted to CHF 0.6 million.

The “Caplutta Sogn Benedetg” grows out of the tradition of a historical order that characterizes many localities in the Surselva. There is one point where it leaves tradition: The Caplutta is made of wood. The sunlight will make it dark, black in the south, silver-gray in the north, like the old farmhouses. The leaf-like or teardrop-shaped basic shape, which is derived from half an infinity symbol, is based on a clear geometric order. The shape of the room, raised from the terrain, is reminiscent of a boat in motion. Inside, the unity of roof and pillars appears as a large canopy. The silver wall behind the supports is illuminated by the light falling from above and gives the room a special atmosphere.
