The hamlet of Bad Dreikirchen was built around three Gothic, closely built chapels at an altitude of 1120  m and belongs to the municipality of Barbian in the Eisack Valley ( South Tyrol ). Dreikirchen can only be reached on foot or via forest roads that are closed to public traffic. It used to be a classic summer resort , today Dreikirchen is a popular hiking destination with some, in addition to the three churches, about 100 year old buildings and inns.

"It was a delightful loneliness, mountains, forest, flowers, water, castles, monasteries and no people ... the dinner was then very tasty."

Churches of St. Gertraud, Nikolaus and Magdalena

The history of the eponymous churches forming a triangle is still unclear. Originally the churches stood side by side in a row. After a flood destroyed the Antonius Church , it was rebuilt behind St. Nikolaus and St. Gertraud (dedicated to Gertrud von Nivelles ) and called Magdalenenkirche from the 16th century. The oldest and largest of the churches, St. Gertraud, was first mentioned in a document in 1237. The other two churches, St. Nicholas and St. Magdalena , were first mentioned in 1422. The assumption that a pre-Christian spring shrine preceded the chapels could not be confirmed in archaeological test excavations. Water certainly played a role in the choice of location, but it is more likely to be interpreted as a sanctuary. The Partons are important patron saints of pilgrims and travelers. In addition, the Höhenweg, which connected Brixen via Villanders and the Ritten with Bozen, passed the sanctuaries in close proximity. Mining was also of fundamental importance for the region around the Villandro mountain (also known as mons argenti in the Middle Ages ). This is reflected in the frequent depiction of the two saints Nicholas and Barbara . All three churches are richly decorated with frescoes and altars .

Gasthof Bad Dreikirchen

The nearby Bad Dreikirchen inn has also been in use since the Middle Ages. In the rebuilt and newly opened inn, u. a. Christian Morgenstern and Sigmund Freud spent their summer vacation. The Briol district is also located near Dreikirchen. The current hotel building was built in 1928 on the site of a former refuge by Hubert Lanzinger . The striking building is based on the Bauhaus style and has remained unchanged to this day. Below the guest house are several buildings by the Austrian architect Lois Welzenbacher .
