The Waldschänke Hellerau is a listed, former restaurant building on the property at Am Grünen Zipfel 2 in Hellerau and is used as an event room and community center.

History and architecture

The Waldschänke building in Hellerau was built around 1880 and was a popular excursion restaurant on Pillnitz-Moritzburger Weg even before the Garden City was founded . Karl Schmidt reached an agreement here with the mayors of the neighboring communities Rähnitz and Klotzsche on the establishment of Hellerau in 1909. The property was bought in 1906 by Karl Schmidt. In 1910, the building was brought into its current form based on a design by Richard Riemerschmid , expanded with additions and a courtyard-spanning covered walkway, and stylistically adapted to the neighboring buildings. The Waldschänke later had important guests, including Oskar Kokoschka , Gerhart Hauptmann and Franz Kafka , who noted in his diary:

"Hellerau. [...] Waldschenke, lecture by 'Narciß' in the garden of [Paul] Adler , tour of the Dalcrozehaus, evening in the Waldschenke [...]. Unsuccessful: […] wrong electric to Hellerau, no room in the Waldschenke; forget that I want E. there to call me on the phone, so I turn back; […] Dalcroze in Geneva; came to the Waldschenke too late next morning. "

The kitchen of the restaurant was adapted to the environment in its offer with health food.

The Waldschänke was used as a restaurant until the later GDR era. Then the upper floors were converted into apartments and a training center of the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau moved into the ground floor . Due to insufficient maintenance, the building fell into disrepair and was unused and infested with sponge at the beginning of the 1990s , so that it was threatened with permanent loss.

After several unsuccessful attempts to revitalize the restaurant, the building was renovated until 2013 and has since been used by the Verein Bürgerzentrum Hellerau e. V. used.

The building is a two-storey, single standing plastered building with a basement made of sandstone rustika on Moritzburger Weg in the vicinity of the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau. It is covered with a two-storey hipped roof with an attic and bat dormers . Riemerschmid gave the building a semicircular veranda over a sandstone foundation and an arcade around the courtyard.
