As a bat dormer , sometimes also ox-eye or frog-mouth dormer , one designates a dormer window , which, curved like a carnival arch , is integrated into a roof surface.

The curve of the dormer results from the ratio of the dormer height to the dormer width. In order to achieve a visually harmonious view, z. B. the ratio of the dormer height to half the dormer width 1: 3. Mainly, the dormitory conditions depend on the regional conditions and the type of roofing z. B. beaver roof, thatch, slate or split wood shingles.

The bat dormer is one of the most complex dormer shapes in carpentry . This dormer shape is more complex than most of the others, not only in the manufacture of the roof structure , but also in the further roofing .

Thanks to modern CAD and CNC tools, it is possible to manufacture an inexpensive fillet piling system that makes covering easier. The serial prefabrication of the interior was also made possible.
