New Point Loma Lighthouse ( officially Point Loma Light ) is a lighthouse on the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula in San Diego , California.
history
The tower was first put into operation on March 23, 1891. It replaced the Old Point Loma Lighthouse , which stands on a 120 m high cliff above sea level. Its light could often not be seen because of the frequent fog and low cloud cover. Since there was no foghorn, the lighthouse keeper warned the ships of the dangerous rocks with shots from a shotgun. Therefore, the new lighthouse was built at a lower height. The first lighthouse keeper was Robert Decatur Israel, who had worked on the old lighthouse for 18 years.
The original light had a luminosity of 600,000 candlesticks and could be seen from a distance of 15 nautical miles . In addition, there was a two-tone diaphone foghorn and living space for several families.
In terms of design, New Point Loma Lighthouse is the only lighthouse of its kind that has been preserved on the west coast. The design is very similar to the lighthouses Coney Island Light , Plum Island Range Rear Light, La Pointe Light and Duluth South Breakwater Inner Light, which were all built at the same time. The latter three are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
In 1973 the control of the light was automated. In February 2013, the beacon installed in 1999 was replaced by a VLB-44. By using the LED light, the maintenance costs could be reduced and at the same time the brightness of the lighthouse increased.
